Robert Jerry Lanier Jr. (Bob Lanier) was an NBA basketball player who spent time with the Detroit Pistons and Milwaukee Bucks (NBA).

In 1992, Bob was named to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.


In 14 NBA seasons, Bob averaged 20.1 points per game, 10.1 rebounds per game, 3.1 assists per game, 1.5 blocks per game, and 1.1 steals per game while shooting 51.4 percent from the floor.

Bob appeared in eight NBA All-Star Games, winning the game’s Most Valuable Player award in 1974.

Both the Pistons and the Bucks retired Bob’s No. 16 jersey, while St. Bonaventure University retired his No. 31 jersey.

Bob can’t be mentioned without mentioning the 1970 St. Bonaventure men’s basketball team, as he scored 2,067 points in three seasons at Bona.

After a season in which he averaged 29.1 points per game, the Detroit Pistons selected Bob as the No. 1 overall pick in the 1970 NBA draft.

Bob Lanier was born on September 10, 1948, and died after a brief illness on May 10, 2022, at the age of 73.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said in a statement announcing Bob’s death:

“Bob Lanier was a Hall of Fame player and among the most talented centers in the history of the NBA, but his impact on the league went far beyond what he accomplished on the court.”

Bob also served as the league’s global ambassador for more than 30 years, “traveling the world to teach the game’s values and make a positive impact on young people everywhere.”
