With the departure of former Ballon D’Or winner Karim Benzema, who left for Saudi Arabia, the 20-year-old Bellingham seamlessly integrated into the new 4-4-2 formation, showcasing effective teamwork with Rodrygo and Vinícius Júnior.

Madrid’s first opportunity came through Federico Valverde’s powerful long-range strike in the 14th minute, narrowly missing the target as it grazed the crossbar.

They broke the deadlock in the 28th minute after a defensive lapse from Athletic. A challenge won against Dani Carvajal inside the box wasn’t properly cleared, and Rodrygo capitalized on the loose ball, skillfully placing it between goalkeeper Unai Simón and the near post.

Eight minutes later, Bellingham displayed his finesse by volleying a corner from David Alaba with an arcing shot that soared over Simon and nestled into the top right corner.
