Kumar Basnet, known in Nepali as (कुमार बस्नेत), is a folk singer, dancer, and songwriter from Nepal. He began his artistic journey in his hometown as far back as 1957 and has earned the title of ‘Nepalese Folk Legend‘ due to his highly successful singing career.

In 1960, he embarked on his career, and his outstanding musical contributions led to a successful singing career. Currently, he serves as a board member of various esteemed organizations, including the Nepal Film Board, Pratilipi Adhikar Sanrakshyaan Maanch, Nepal Music Society, and Sanskritik Sambardhan Parishad. Among his notable hits are songs like “Herda Ramo,” “Ama Bhanda,” and “Lai Bari Lai,” which featured in the Nepalese film “Chhakka Panja.” Throughout his career, he has received numerous awards, including the Ratna Record Puraskar, Gorkha Dakshin Bahu-First, Birendra-Aishwarya Sewa Padak, and Tri Shakti Patta-Third. He completed his schooling at Padmodaya High School in Kathmandu.
Kumar Basnet became a renowned dancer after joining Bhairav Nritya Dal, an organization known for organizing cultural events. In 2014, he traveled to Silong, Assam, for a cultural program. His unwavering dedication and hard work in his career propelled him to fame. He successfully completed his School Leaving Certificate (SLC) in 2015 from Nandi Ratri. In 2016, he enrolled at Tri Chandra College and simultaneously secured a position at Nepal Rastra Bank. During that same year, he attended an interview for song recording, which was later broadcast on Radio Nepal and earned recognition from esteemed figures like Prakashman Singh, Shyamdas Baishnav, and Dharmaraj Thapa.
Kumar Basnet tied the knot in 2023. In addition to his singing career, he had a keen interest in activities like hunting, fishing, badminton, and football. He boasts a remarkable portfolio of over 200 recorded songs and has embarked on numerous international musical tours. His talents also extended to dance as he participated in the International Folk Dance Competition in 1974, which took place across France, Belgium, and Germany. In 1978, he showcased his skills at the International Gala Night in Bangladesh. Notably, in 2002, he was nominated by the United States for the Man of the Year award and was recognized as a Cultural Ambassador of Manchester and London by the respective city mayors.
